German govt spokesman says Greek proposal ‘good basis for negotiations’

Statements by Steffen Seibert

Newsroom February 20 01:46

The Germany chancellery has expressed an opinion that the Greek government’s tabled proposal for a six-month extension of the loan agreement is a “great basis for further negotiations”.

German Chancellery spokesperson Steffen Seibert said Greece is interested in receiving help from the EU.

At the same time, he distanced himself from the characterization given by a German non-paper given during the Euroworking Group, saying he would not have personally called the plan a “Trojan Horse”.

He also characterized the talks held between Greek PM Tsipras and German Chancellor Merkel as fruitful.

Finally, a spokesman for the German Finance ministry said it would be wrong to say that Wolfgang Schaeuble does not seek a solution for Greece.
