According to international media reports, the ambassador, who was scheduled to give a lecture at the event, has been slashed on the face and wrist with a razor by the extremist who was identified by police as Kim Ki-jong.

The assailant, who was dressed in traditional Koran attire, was immediately apprehended by the police. According to local witnesses, just before the attack, the 55-year-old man was shouting slogans condemning joint military exercises by South Korea and the US and calling for the reunification of the Korean peninsula.

42-year-old Mark Lippert was taken to the hospital and received treatment for his injuries. According to BBC, it took 80 stitches to close the ambassador’s facial wound, which was 11 cm long and 3 cm deep. However, shortly after his operation, the US envoy said he was “doing well” in a tweet.
