A South African university on Friday reported the first “successful” penis transplant, saying the nine-hour operation was performed last December by specialists at the University of Stellenbosch.
According to a report posted by NBC news, the man “… had his penis amputated three years ago following complications from a circumcision performed in his late teens.
NBC said the 21-year-old unnamed patient “has made a full recovery and has regained all function in the newly transplanted organ.”
A man in China reportedly received a penis transplant in 2005. That operation also appeared to be successful, but doctors said the man asked them to remove his new penis two weeks later because of psychological problems experienced by him and his wife, according to the news outlet.
Botched circumcisions are apparently a problem in South Africa due to regional customs mandating the practise on young men entering adulthood.
No details were given on the … source of the donated penis.
