Hundreds of friends, relatives and local residents gathered on Tuesday in the small village of Seli, in Rethymno prefecture on the island of Crete, to attend Vangelis Giakoumakis’ funeral.
His body was found on Sunday in a marshy field some 800 meters from the Ioannina vocational school he attended, nearly six weeks after he went missing on Feb. 6.
The case attracted nationwide attention in Greece due to allegations that Giakoumakis was the victim of incessant bullying (or hazing) by fellow students from Crete. Those allegations are being investigated as a possible cause for his suicide.
The young man’s body was returned to the central Cretan village of Armenoi, eight kilometers south of Rethymno. A sixty-car procession accompanied Vangelis to his final resting place.
