P. Moscovici: EU won’t keep Greece in Eurozone “at any price”

The EU financial chief's views expressed in Die Welt on Wednesday reflect those expressed by German Finance Minister W. Schaeuble last week

Newsroom March 18 09:54

European Monetary and Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici told German newspaper Die Welt on Wednesdaay that the EU is not prepared to keep Greece within the eurozone at any price. He noted, however, that a Grexit would inflict great damage to the currency union.

“The Eurogroup has an overwhelming will to keep Greece in the eurozone. Financial accidents can happen. Nonetheless, our task is not to organize this but to prevent it,” he said. “We won’t keep Greece in the eurozone at any price but under strict conditions that are acceptable for both sides.”

Moscovici said that a possible third aid package for Greece should look different to previous ones. He said that talking about Plan B would mean that belief in Plan A has stopped.

The EU commissioner said that the eurozone was in a better position to handle a Grexit thn it had been two years ago but he said that an exit of a member state from the single currency would still inflict damage. He said that this would cause everyone to wonder, “Which member state is next?”
