The silver cup won by Olympic athlete Spyros Louis during his win at the marathon of the first modern Olympics in 1896 was returned to the Acropolis Museum on Thursday. The cup will be on display at an area accessible without a ticket until it makes its way to its permanent home at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s Cultural Center that is under construction.
The cup had been on display at the Acropolis Museum from September 2012 through to August 2014 where it was visited by over two million visitors. It was then displayed for six months at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation had bought the cup at an international auction in 2012.
