SYRIZA-led government crumbling?

Another official resigns

Newsroom July 15 04:39

The SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government is on the brink of implosion on the day it is trying to pass the prerequisite austerity and reform measures in Parliament, a condition as agreed upon with the EU institutions in  order to move forward with a third bailout.

After the resignation of Deputy Finance Minister Nadia Valavani, the general secretary of the ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Network, Manos Manousakis, also submitted his resignation. He underlined that the current draft bill under consideration in Parliament renders his stay in the ministry impossible.

Meanwhile, more half of SYRIZA’s central committee members are expressing their opposition to the government’s proposed measures. One hundred and seven of the 201 members demand that the party committee convene to discuss the bill, which the government must ratify to receive a 3-year bailout plan.

In a document, the 107 members stress that a ‘coup’ took place in Brussels on July 12 with the signing of the agreement between the Greek government and the EU institutions. “The deal with the institutions was the result of threats via immediate economic suffocation and is in reality a new memorandum with onerous and humiliating monitoring terms that are destructive for our land and people”, the letter states.

Of course, come midnight the count will reveal how many SYRIZA MPs passed from “expressing opposition” to actual dissent, i.e. a “no” vote or even — woe be tide — an actual resignation from the Parliament seat.
