Authorities discovered 110 illegal migrants – including 39 minors — crammed into a long-haul truck driven by a Turkish driver on Friday after stopping the vehicle on the Egnatia motorway spanning the breadth of northern Greece.
The people identified themselves as Syrian nationals.
Police located the vehicle after several call were made by motorists travelling along the same highway. The truck was stopped at the Asprovalta intersection.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the journey was billed at 1,800 euros per person!
The group had illegally entered Greek territory some three days ago at an unidentified location along the Greek-Turkish border in the Evros border district. The 56-year-old driver loaded his human cargo on the Greek side of the frontier, reports state.
