Conscription service around the world map men’s military obligations

Greek men are still obliged by law to serve their country

Newsroom October 21 10:35

Statistica shows which countries still retain national service around the world. Greece, along with Norway, Israel, South Korea and Brazil still oblige young men to enforce conscription service. Interestingly enough, Arabia, China and Burma do not, while in Turkey, discussion is underway to abolish it altogether.

Conscription service in Greece

Greek military service is now obligatory for 9 months for men between the ages of 19 and 45. Citizens discharged from active service are normally placed in the Reserve and are subject to periodic recall of 1–10 days at irregular intervals.

Prior to 2009, military service, first introduced in 1909, lasted longer. Historically, it has ranged between 12-36 months depending on various factors affecting the conscript and the political situation. Women are accepted into the Greek army on a voluntary basis and are not required to enlist.
