The Russian plane crash and suspicion that a bomb was responsible has opened a Pandora’s box of Egyptian security gaps. After reports that low-paid airport officials at Sharm el-Sheikh can be bribed for as little as $30 to bypass security monitoring, new reports concerning fake bomb detectors at security checkpoints have surfaced.
Bomb scanning devices shielding hotels, including the five-star resorts, are nothing more than gadgets that have no electrics. Security analysts warn that these devices are “absolutely pointless” and mislead the public by lulling them into a false sense of security.
“IS operatives planning an attack would be wise to them and would know instantly that they offer no protection at checkpoints,” says Security Analyst Paul Beaver.
Two years ago, British conman James McCormich was jailed for ten years after selling 50-million-pounds worth of dud scanners to the Middle East. Two pensioners Samuel and Joan Tree were also convicted of a similar scam last year.
