Turkish jets reportedly downed a warplane violating air space near the Turkish border just over Latakia’s Yamadi village where mostly Turks reside. Turkish authorities say they gave over 10 warnings during a 5-minute period but the fighter plane did not go back, hence it was bombed by two Turkish F-16 fighter jets.
The Russian defense ministry confirmed that the plane was shot down but added that it had not violated Turkish airspace. The aircraft flew at an altitude of 6,000 meters.
Russian authorities claim that Su-24 fighter jet did not violate the Turkish airspace and that they could prove the jet was within Syria’s airspace throughout the flight. The representative of Russian government said that was a very serious incident, for which it was too early to draw conclusions, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov canceled tomorrow’s scheduled trip to Turkey.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to make statements.
Turkey stated that a Russian Su-24 fighter was shot down according to the rules of engagement, since it violated the Turkish airspace despite Turkey’s prior warnings”, while Turkish newspaper Sabah reports that the order of shooting down the jet fighter was given by the office of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.
Two pilots from the downed warplane were seen parachuting to the ground showing that they managed to eject from the jet, however their fate is as yet unknown. Unconfirmed reports claim that they have been captured by rebels in the region.
Dogan News Agency reporters say smoke is rising from the crash site.
CNN Turk reported that Turkish jets downed the fighter jet due to border breach.
Turkish helicopters were sent to collect the two pilots, but one of them is dead and his body was taken Turkmen rebel forces that are fighting against Bashar al-Assad regime in northern Syria. The second pilot is still alive, according to CNN Turk, but he is also held by the rebels. In fact the rebels sent to international media a video showing the dead pilot.
