Konstandinos Doukas, owner of the private Douka School, returned to his upmarket Ekali home after a family outing only to catch burglars in his home. One of the burglars, standing guard while his fellow burglars were in the home, used a hammer to bang onto the Doukas family car while both parents and the young children were inside watching him bang on the vehicle. The other two burglars were running out of the home with two safety boxes that proved too much to carry as they left one of the two behind.
In an exclusive with protothema.gr, the mother of the family states that they immediately realized that their house was being looted when one of the assailants starting striking their car as soon as they entered the garage. She states that there was not enough time to think at that moment. Three days after the incident, she states that it is difficult to recover from the shock.
The young children are trying to delete the scenes of violence and horror from their minds though it is hard to get rid of the image of a man banging on the car with vengeance and menace.
The family arrived at 8 p.m. soon after a small afternoon outing at a theater presentation. “Our mistake is that we did not activate the security system. We left our home early when there was still daylight and we were absent for around two hours,” says Mrs. Douka. “Whoever has an alarm should activate it even if they are out for just a few minutes.”
The father instinctively began to chase the burglars with his car, however as he was leaving the driveway he crashed into another car that had been placed there as a barrier.
