WWII Nazi concentration camp to be turned into luxury vacation resort

The government stated that the conversion will preserve the fortress and boost local economy

Newsroom January 18 05:08

A WWII Nazi concentration camp on the island of Mamula where prisoners were tortured and starved will be transformed into a luxury resort which will include a nightclub and spa.

The island is located near Montenegro’s border with Croatia in the Adriatic Sea at the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. Its formal name is Lastavica, but it is widely known as Mamula.

It is dominated by a fort built in 1853 under Austro-Hungarian rule to defend against enemy ships, but it was only used as a prison and concentration camp during the First and Second World War.

The island is currently uninhabited but tourists can visit it by boat.

The government of Montenegro agreed to allow developers from Switzerland and Egypt to transform this island to a resort causing the anger of the families of those who were imprisoned and tortured during WWII.

The government, though, stated that the conversion will preserve the fortress and boost local economy, as tourism is the Balkan country’s biggest attraction.
