Greek farmers clash with police

Farmers started throwing smoke bombs and police responded with tear gas

Newsroom January 20 12:27

New episodes broke out shortly after 20:00 in Komotini, when farmers tried to enter again the building of the Regional Unity of Rodopi, where the Minister of Rural Development Vangelis Apostolou has remained for 12 hours, since Greek farmers refuse to leave unless they meet again.

The police used tear gas to remove the protesters, while the tensions has not been de-escalated since 2,000 farmers have gathered outside the building and wait.

Violent episodes occurred also on Wednesday morning in Komotini between Greek farmers and the police.

The farmers were gathered outside the building of the Regional Unit of Rodopi where Minister of Rural Development Vangelis Apostolou was. They asked him to come out and discuss, but he refused.

Then, the farmers attempted to enter the building and police tried to prevent them escalating the tension.

Farmers started throwing smoke bombs and riot police reached the site. But, instead of de-escalating the situation, the police started throwing tear gas and farmers responded by throwing eggs.

Finally, the farmers managed to enter the building and have a meeting with the minister.

At the same time, Greek farmers all around Greece will continue protesting against the social security reforms and are expected to block the roads.
