Refugee skirmishes & clashes rising all over Greece (video)

Unaccompanied child refugees on the rise, says Greek coastguard association

Newsroom March 30 09:40

The situation with the refugees and illegal immigrants is becoming increasingly tense across the whole of Greece with skirmishes among refugees themselves and the Greek police breaking out more often and becoming increasingly violent. Desperation and tension between the various ethnic groups is mounting, as a group of Iranian refugees clashed with Afghanis late Tuesday on a hot spot on Chios island, resulting in a reported knife injury. The centre in Chios is currently hosting over 1,500 people and the presence of a dozen police officers, a few coast guards along with Frontex officials cannot guarantee the effective containment of the situation. Police officers have been instructed not to wear uniforms in the hot spot to avoid being targeted by refugees and illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, Greek police used force to disperse refugees and illegal immigrants who had occupied railway tracks near the Idomeni camp Tuesday night, where 11,000 refugees and illegal immigrants still remain with the hope that the borders will eventually open. Refugees and illegal immigrants in the camp have started blocking off the road with rubbish containers to get their demands across to the Greek authorities, who have so far unsuccessfully tried to persuade them to relocate to organised hot spots around the country. The conditions in Greece’s largest port, Piraeus, are deteriorating with nearly 6,000 refugees and illegal immigrants cramped into impromptu living facilities, warehouses, 1100 tents and others living in open spaces. Meanwhile, the Greek association of coastguard officers has warned that the number of unaccompanied child refugees arriving on the islands is increasing during a press conference they held.
