A shocking video showing the negotiation conducted between police and a man who almost killed his child in Cyprus was released on Saturday.
The footage was aired on Alpha Cyprus TV channel and showed the moment Cypriot police negotiators were asking the Egyptian man, who kept his 16-month baby as a hostage, to leave the apartment and not blow up the apartment. A few seconds later, the man was shot dead.
The head of the Police Department of Larnaca, Haralampos Zachariou, said that “yesterday a 36-year-old European citizen (Hungarian) claimed that her husband was holding their 16-month baby as hostage in their apartment in Oroklini. Police officers rushed to the scene and started the negotiations with the Egyptian man, 41.”
He added that police did everything they could to convince the 41-year-old to let the baby free. The man had informed the police about his intention to kill the baby and while negotiations were in progress, the Egyptian was kept jeopardizing the safety of the child, since he had opened the gas supply at the kitchen and threw Molotov cocktails inside the apartment.
The Egyptian managed to stab the baby before being shot dead by police. The baby was transferred immediately to the hospital. According to the doctors, the baby’s condition is not critical now.
Mr. Zachariou did not want to reveal any other information on the incident.
