Former Olympiakos basketball player Steve Yiatzoglou has caused great fury after his controversial statements at an event organised by extreme-right party Golden Dawn (GD). Yiatzoglou characterised the murder of Greek rapper Pavlos Fyssas by members of Golden Dawn ‘an unfortunate moment’. The former basketball player and coach also attempted to justify his presence at the event by posting on his social media accounts that he disagreed the party had anything to do with nazis, adding that if he discovered any such affiliations he would immediately abandon it. In his post he expressed surprise about the backlash his attendance at the function had caused saying it had been blown out of proportions. Yiatzoglou said the accusations against GD were a smoke screen for the public and wondered who was and was not a fascist.
