Turkey continues provocations, despite Tsipras’s calls for respect of international laws

Greek PM visit to Cairo

Newsroom October 12 09:19

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras might have called on Turkey to respect international law and the standing treaties on international borders, Tuesday in Egypt, where he met with the leaders of Cyprus and Egypt in the framework of the trilateral conference of cooperation, but Turkey was not interested in listening as it issued a NOTAM (a notice to aircraft pilots to be on alert for potential hazards). While Tsipras was delivering his statements on Turkey to refrain from disputing the recognised international treaties (Lausanne) and respect the set international borders during the joint press conference in Cairo, with Egypt’s President Abdel al-Sisi and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiadis, Greece’s eastern neighbour was issuing a NOTAM in the area west of the eastern Mediterranean Greek island of Kastelorizo, bus to a military exercise SAR conducted by Greece on October 19 and 19. The Turkish side claim the area is a demilitarised zone and should be included in military drills.

On the results of the trilateral meeting, the Greek PM said that it was a strategic choice to promote peace, security and cooperation in the fragile region. According to the Cairo Declaration, an agreement signed between the three countries on a number of matters, the three countries have agreed to closely collaborate in order to promote stability, security, trade and cooperation in a series of matters in the wider eastern Mediterranean. The agreement provides the achievement of planned projects including in the fields of energy, sea transport, tourism and agriculture.
