Notaries block legal proceedings of main residence auctions

They called on government to take actions to protect main residence and their physical safety

Newsroom October 18 07:48

Notaries have decided to extend their abstention from the legal proceedings of auctioning off main residences in Greek courts, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, October 19, until the government guarantees the smooth conditions for the procedures to move forward. It is the second week in a row that they are refusing to participate in court proceedings, as growing outage among citizens resulted in a series of physical confrontations in court rooms dealing with cases of poor people having their main residences auctioned off due to debts to banks. During a press conference held last week, notaries had called on politicians to expedite legislation in order to set limits on the auctioning off of citizens’ main residences, while they raised the issue of them being physically targeted and threatened by enraged groups of citizens in court rooms across the country. The notaries stressed they would reach a decision on their final actions in the immediate future, while they noted the gravity of the situation by pointing out that the court system had been overwhelmed by the large number payment orders, many of which were associated with main residence and farm-land auctions. As they stressed, 40,000 such cases were scheduled to be taken before Athens County Court alone by the February 16.
