A 47-year-old homeless man wielding a screwdriver broke into a car in New Ionia, Volos without taking anything from the vehicle, then turned himself in to the Magnisias police station at 03:00 Tuesday and told the on-duty police officers to arrest him.

The unusual case was documented by the police and published in the local press after the man committed a crime and reported his action to the police so that they would take him in, hoping to secure himself a plate of food and a warm place to sleep in prison.

After filling out the customary report and taking the suspect to the site of the crime to verify his story, the police officers were flabbergasted when the vagrant asked them to drive him back to prison so he could have a meal and a bit of shelter from the cold.

The 47-year-old Thessalonikian reportedly travels frequently between Thessaloniki and Volos, where he stays periodically, and has had occasional brushes with the law in the past for petty theft.

The homeless was taken to the district attorney of Volos, but was later released according to the law because he turned himself in voluntarily, and also because the owner of the car did not press charges against him.
It is not known whether the poor man was given a meal or a bed for the night.
