In a joint statement, High Representative of the Union of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Francesca Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn called on Turkey to refrain from escalating tensions further and lower the tones. In the statement the two EU officials expressed their support to the EU-member states that came under attack by Turkish officials at the highest levels. The statement stressed that the decisions related to election campaign rallies in EU member-states were made by national authorities and in accordance to domestic and international laws. The statement went on to urge Turkey to avoid “excessive statements”, underlining that such matters can only be solved through dialogue. The joint statement also noted that the planned constitutional reforms by the Turkish leadership would be judged when and if they were implemented.
