Majority of Greeks (69%) are in favour receiving refugees, Pew study shows

Hungary and Poland at the other end of the spectrum

Newsroom September 19 08:10

Although 92% of Greeks are critical of the European Union’s handling of the refugee crisis, about 7 out of 10 (69%) are in favour of receiving refugees, based on a new poll by the Pew Research Center, conducted between May and June.
At a European level, despite the rise of nationalist and anti-immigrant parties, the poll shows that 80% of adults in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden agree with hosting refugees fleeing their countries to escape violence and war.
France (79%) and the United Kingdom (74%) also have high rates of acceptance for refugees.

According to the poll, the majority of respondents are in favour of welcoming refugees: in Greece, 69% (27% against), while in Italy the figure drops to 56% (32% against). Unsurprisingly, Hungary is the country with the lowest acceptance rates with 32%, with Poland also recording low acceptance rates at 49%.
Outside Europe, Mexicans (79%), Canadians (74%) and Australians (72%) are for accepting refugees in their countries, followed by US and Japan (66%).
