EU Summit: Mitsotakis briefed the 27 on the Turkish provocations

The issue of Turkey was high on the agenda of the Summit of European Union leaders, according to the posts of the representative of the President of the Council, Charles Michel.

The Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis together with the Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades informed the other leaders about the actions of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with Greece asking for a series of European sanctions against Ankara.

The issue was raised before the debate on the Recovery Fund even began.

According to a government official, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for tougher sanctions against Turkey. The same competent sources stated that Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that it is not possible for Turkey to violate the sovereign rights of two Member States and that there should be a strong reaction.

In addition, he raised the issue of the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, emphasizing that it is indicative of the way in which it deals with international agreements, mutual respect and interfaith dialogue.

Finally, he asked for a detailed discussion of the EU-Turkey relationship at the next European Council.
