The impressive USS Hershel “Woody” Williams is a Lewis B. Puller-class arrived at the Souda bay on Tuesday as part of its inaugural deployment in the US Sixth Fleet region.
The US warship, making its first voyage since launching in March, is 230 meters long and belongs to the 6th Fleet. The ship was named after Marine Hershel “Woody” Williams, who in the United States is famous for his heroism in the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, for which he was awarded a medal by President Truman on October 5, 1945.
The US Navy ship was welcomed in Greece by the US Ambassador to Greece, Jeffrey Payatt.
