The major opposition party leader and president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, called on the government to hold elections “immediately” in an interview with “Avgi tis Kyriakis”.

“We are calling for elections because there is no other way. Because every day that passes, dozens of our helpless fellow human beings die. Millions of families are freezing, who are seeing their already meager income being eroded by uncontrolled profiteering. The phenomena of decay at the top of the power structures are multiplying. And insecurity, the fear of tomorrow, pervades society. Elections are the only democratic way out of this besiegement,” said the opposition leader.

Tsipras promised to make the Public Power Corporation public again and presented his positions to deal with the high costs: “With the election of the new government, we will increase the minimum wage to 800 euros, a fact that will drag all the salary scales in the private sector upward. We will eliminate, or drastically reduce, the debt of small and medium-sized enterprises created by the pandemic. And we will move on to temporary relief measures for households and businesses for the duration of the crisis, including the reduction of VAT on fuels, to the threshold set by the European Commission, and the reduction of VAT on basic foodstuffs, to a minimum rate of 6%. At the same time, we will put a permanent and decisive end to the impunity of the cartels.”
