Macron tables proposal for new “European political community” for Ukraine and the UK

Macron said the new community would be open to the UK too

Newsroom May 10 11:40

French President Emmanuel Macon tabled a proposal for the renewal of the political map of Europe yesterday in Strasbourg with the creation of a new “European political community” that would enable non-EU countries, such as Ukraine and Britain, to join the “European core values”.

The new body proposed by Macron during his speech yesterday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg will include members of the EU but also those who do not belong to the “European family”.

According to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”, Macron proposed the creation of a parallel political community – similar to the EU – that could be an option for countries aspiring to join the Union or for countries that have already left the bloc.

Only Britain, which left the EU a year and a half ago with Brexit, belongs to Macron’s “those who left” list.

However, Marcon did not provide details of his plan but indicated that he is eager to find a solution for Ukraine, which demands its immediate accession to the EU after the start of the Russian invasion.

According to the website “Politico”, the President of France did not explain how the privileges of a Member State will be balanced with its obligations, nor did he give details on how EU members would provide security guarantees to the new ones.

Macron argued that the “ambition” of the Ukrainian people, as well as that of Moldova and Georgia, to join the EU, called on us to rethink the geography and organisation of our continent”.

“Ukraine with its struggle and courage is already a heartfelt member of our Europe, of our family, of our union,” Macron said.

However, while expressing his solidarity with Ukraine, which hopes to receive EU candidate status at the June summit, he hastened to point out that the road would be long:

Mitsotakis: “Farmers will receive every euro they are entitled to — Solutions come through dialogue, not roadblocks”

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis assured farmers that all payments owed to them will be delivered in full, emphasizing that while agricultural workers have every right to demand more support, “extreme forms of protest, such as roadblocks, may exert pressure but ultimately disrupt daily life and do not help us move forward faster”
