Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis informed a cross-party delegation of the US House of Representatives, led by the chairman of the Military Affairs Committee, Adam Smith, about the extreme and escalating aggressive rhetoric of the Turkish side, but also about the unacceptable questioning of Greek sovereignty.

Mr. Mitsotakis welcomed the American parliamentarians at the Maximos Palace, in the presence of the US ambassador, George Tsounis, and made it clear that Greece will not accept a violation of its sovereignty or sovereign rights.

At the same time, he reiterated that Greece’s positions are based on International Law, the Law of the Sea and the principles of good neighborliness and reaffirmed our country’s firm position in favor of understanding and dialogue based on this framework.

During the meeting, Kyriakos Mitsotakis underlined the excellent level of Greek-American relations and the strategic relationship between Greece and the USA. He also highlighted the progress that has been made in terms of military cooperation between the two countries, based on the second Amendment Protocol to the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA). In addition, he emphasized the role of Greece as a pillar of stability, peace and security in the wider region.

The Prime Minister emphasized the strategic importance of Alexandroupolis in terms of energy supply and energy security. He also emphasized that Greece, in addition to being a gateway for the influx of energy into Europe, is also becoming a data management and storage hub with investments by companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and Google.

The instrumentalization of energy at the expense of Europe on the part of Russia was also discussed. Kyriakos Mitsotakis informed the US delegation about the support measures implemented by Greece at the national level, as well as about the proposal to impose a ceiling on the wholesale price of natural gas, which, on a Greek initiative, has the support of an additional 14 states- members of the EU.
