There are tens of thousands of traffic lights in the prefecture of Attica that regulate the smooth traffic of vehicles and pedestrians…

The prefecture of Attica has more than 2,500 intersections as well as hundreds of kilometres of roads. It is an understatement to say that the responsibility of regulating traffic is not an easy task, as the decisions reached impact the lives of millions of motorists on a daily basis.

The transport engineers are the ones who are constantly faced with making difficult decisions as the data often changes, so the parameters that regulate the traffic must also change.

The safety of motorists is achieved via managing and operating traffic lights whose number translates into tens of thousands. According to the data, more than 37.000 traffic lights are currently operating in the prefecture of Attica.

Each of them has its own computer and it determines the time it will change colour allowing or prohibiting traffic to vehicles and pedestrians.

Note that the time settings on the traffic lights can be changed depending on traffic requirements or even emergencies. The Attica Region is responsible for the intervention, which is responsible for their planning and maintenance.
