Greek Supreme Court Judge resigns over the Kasidiaris party backlash

The Judge had accused the government of interfering in the judicial process after a government amendment

Newsroom April 10 11:38

The vice-president of the Supreme Court and president of the A1 District of the Supreme Court, Christos Tzanerikos, has resigned from the judiciary after the furor caused following his public statement criticising a legislative amendment by the government aimed at blocking the extreme right party of Ilias Kasidiaris, who is serving time in prison, of registering for the upcoming national elections.

The vice-president of the Supreme Court who was going to preside over the A1 District which was set to adjudicate over the legality of participation in the elections, of all parties, including that of Hellene’s party founded by Ilias Kasidiaris, resigned after the reactions as he publicly took a position on the legislative regulation of the government.

Christos Tzanerikos described in his critique of the amendment that assigned the Plenary of the judges of the A1 District of the Supreme Court (and not to the 5-member composition as is done until today) the judgment for the Kasidiaris party – like the other parties – as unprecedented interference in the work of the supreme court, while he stated that the regulation in question was a sign of distrust and lack of confidence in his person.

The response to his statement came from the Minister of the Interior, Makis Voridis, who, in his statement, emphasised, among other things, that the Parliament legislates and not the judges, while the position of Evangelos Venizelos, who called on the supreme judge to abstain from his duties, was harsh.

Following these developments, the A1 District will be presided over by the most senior Areopagite, Mrs. Evdoxia Kiuptsidou.
