First 8 Greeks freed from Sudan

Their release was secured with the aid of French authorities

The first eight Greeks citizens trapped in war-torn Sudan were freed following a successful mission carried out by Greek personnel with the aid of the French authorities. Their removal was achieved by plane.

In the announcement made by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is pointed out that following the continuous communications of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a safe release, the first group of Greek citizens, including the two injured, left Sudan, with the help of France, and is on a flight to Djibouti.

Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was informed of the successful outcome of the mission.

The process and coordination with EU partners and allies for the release of the remaining Greeks and their family members are ongoing, the statement added.

It is recalled that earlier it became known that the first aircraft carrying about 100 foreign nationals and heading to Djibouti departed from Khartoum.
