Members of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus were attacked by Turks and Turkish Cypriots, because they tried to prevent illegal works of the pseudo-state in the dead zone in the bi-communal village of Pyla.
The occupying regime is working on the construction of a road between Pyla and Arsos. The UN has warned that these operations are illegal and disrupt the status quo of the region, violating the no-man’s-land.
The Turks have ignored UN calls to end the works and today UNFICYP soldiers went to the area to enforce order.
The Turks were enraged and attacked them, also destroying UN cars.
A while ago, the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus issued a statement in which it states:
“The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) condemns the assaults against UN peacekeepers and damage to UN vehicles by personnel from the Turkish Cypriot side this morning.
The incident took place inside the buffer zone near Pyla/Pile as UN peacekeepers blocked unauthorized construction work in the area.
Threats to the safety of UN peacekeepers and damage to UN property are unacceptable and constitute a serious crime under international law which will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
UNFICYP calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to respect the mission’s mandated authority inside the UN buffer zone, refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions further and to withdraw all personnel and machinery from the UN buffer zone immediately.
The mission is monitoring the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring calm and stability are maintained in the area.”

The attack was condemned by a statement issued by the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In particular, the announcement states:
“We unequivocally condemn today’s unacceptable attacks by Turkish Cypriots against members of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), who attempted to obstruct unauthorized road construction work within the dead zone near Pyla.
Attempting to create a dead zone within the dead zone is a flagrant violation of the status quo, while attacking UN peacekeepers is an act of contempt for international law.
Illegal operations must be stopped immediately and there is a need to avoid any kind of activity that will cause further escalation.
Similar actions do not contribute at all to the efforts of the UN to revive the talks for the solution of the Cyprus issue.
Greece is in full coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and will take all appropriate actions towards international organizations and governments.”
