Tripartite meeting between Mitsotakis, Christodoulidis and Netanyahu

"The good atmosphere between Greece and Turkey should be consistent. This requires Turkey to review the aggressive stance it has maintained in recent years"

Newsroom September 4 01:19

The Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis made statements after the completion of the work of the Tripartite Summit in Nicosia.

The three leaders referred to the close cooperation between the two countries, which is ever deepening.

Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the number of Israelis visiting Greece and Israel, while he revealed that he met his compatriots in the country yesterday, with whom he greeted them.

The three leaders decided to continue their cooperation in matters of fire prevention and response, trade, energy and defence.

Cyprus and Greece agree that the next few months will be critical for both Cypriot and Greek-Turkish relations, as Nikos Christodoulidis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in statements before their bilateral meeting at the Cypriot Presidential Palace.

President Christodoulidis stated that he is particularly pleased to welcome Mr. Mitsotakis to Cyprus, this time in the context of the very important tripartite meeting with Israel, as he said.

“Regional partnerships that, among many others, demonstrate the role that Cyprus and Greece, Greece and Cyprus as EU member states can play in the Eastern Mediterranean region, an area of particular geostrategic importance,” he added.

He said that they will have the opportunity to discuss both the Cyprus issue and the Greek-Turkish issue.

“I consider that September and October are crucial for how things will develop. The General Assembly of the United Nations, the meetings you will have, the meetings I will have as well as the October European Council are of decisive importance and we are here for such developments that will lead to positive steps in both the Greek-Turkish and the Cypriot “, he said.

President Christodoulidis said that “the resolution of disputes, the resolution of any problems, the resolution of the Cyprus issue is of primary importance for us. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the current state of affairs cannot be the future of Cyprus and what I have conveyed very clearly recently on the occasion of the UN Assistant Secretary General’s presence in Cyprus is our readiness to resume talks as soon as possible possible to lead to the solution of the Cyprus problem, a solution of the Cyprus problem that will lead to benefits for all parties involved”, he underlined.

For his part, Mr. Mitsotakis thanked President Christodoulidis for the excellent hospitality and noted that he is in Cyprus for the second time in a few weeks, this time as part of the tripartite cooperation they have developed with Israel.

Addressing President Christodoulidis, he said that “I think you are absolutely right when you say that the next two months will be critical months on many levels. First of all, regarding the issue of the Cyprus issue, I would like to subscribe to your point of view, your approach that it is very important to restart the talks as soon as possible, within the framework of the UN resolutions”, he added, noting that Greece will always be a firm supporter of this of the position.

He noted that the Foreign Minister of Greece will be in Turkey tomorrow to have political discussions with his counterpart.

“But it remains for this good climate to obviously have consistency and continuity. This certainly requires from Turkey a review of the aggressive attitude it has maintained towards Greece in recent years”, he added.
