Incredible waterspout recorded in Evia, as Daniel system continues its destructive path in Greece (video)

The waterspout phenomenon occurs quite often now in the coastal areas of the country and according to experts is due to global warming

Newsroom September 6 03:14

Breathtaking images were recorded on the beach of the port of Kymi in Evia as the severe weather system Daniel raged in the country causing extensive problems in the region. The video of a waterspout that formed on the beach is striking.

As seen in the footage, a huge cloud seems to have sprung up from the sea and become one with the holographic sky covering the area.

The waterspout phenomenon occurs quite often now in the coastal areas of the country and according to experts is due to global warming.

The main cause of this phenomenon is the large temperature difference between water surfaces and upper atmospheric layers.

Although weaker than tornadoes, a waterspout has a wind speed of over 100 km per hour. But when it reaches land, it fades away. Most waterspouts are observed near the tropics and less frequently in the mid-latitudes and their appearance is, according to experts, mainly due to global warming.

A tornado is formed over land and is essentially a vertical column of atmospheric air that rotates strongly and extends from the base of the storm clouds toward the ground, forming the characteristic funnel. If a tornado occurs over the sea, it is called a waterspout, while smaller-sized tornadoes can occur over desert areas or flat land covered by soil, taking the name of dark tornadoes.

The bad weather is  continuing to wreak havoc across Greece as torrential rain has caused serious problems in Volos and Karditsa.
