Miltiadis Varvitsiotis announced his resignation from the position of Minister of Shipping at noon on Monday.
As he explains in his resignation statement, he took the decision to resign after “the attack against him takes increasingly toxic characteristics” after the “statement that was easily misinterpreted, caused outrage” and for which, as he says, “I immediately apologized sincerely”.
“In no case did I equate the victim with the perpetrators. In no case did I absolve the responsibilities of the shipping company, which it still refuses to take on”, continues Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, who lists the actions he took when the first phase of the administrative examination was completed, when he referred “the responsible officers of the Coast Guard body to the competent disciplinary council”.
“I may be a good politician for some, not for others. But I don’t accept being stoned as a human being. My political path and my personal dignity dictate that I do not remain in the position of Minister of Shipping and Island Policy. That is why I submitted my resignation to the Prime Minister. I thank him for his trust”, concludes Miltiadis Varvitsiotis in his statement.
