Breast implants act like a mini airbag in a low-speed collision, study shows!

Based on the scientists' results, the stress on the breast with silicone implants was 23% lower than in a natural breast

Newsroom September 19 05:46

Besides having an impressive bust, women who have silicone implants have another advantage according to American scientists who concluded that breast augmentation with silicone implants can reduce the risk of injury in case of an accident.

With one proviso, as they state in their research: As long as the vehicle is not going at high speeds.

For example, as the German newspaper Bild reports, if an accident occurs in the supermarket car park, female drivers who have had breast augmentation are at less risk of injury than women who have trusted nature, or than men.

“Breast implants act like a mini airbag in a low-speed collision,” explains Dr. Helge Jens, a specialist in plastic and cosmetic surgery at Aachen’s Domhof Clinic. “Silicone implants can better distribute the pressure to which the chest wall is exposed in a car accident,” he adds.

The study by doctors at the Society of Plastic Surgery in Spokane (Washington State) confirms the results of the German clinic in Aachen.

The American researchers simulated a collision with and without silicone implants. Medical gel simulating a natural breast and a breast insert was hit by almost 2000 Newtons. This load corresponds to an impact speed of about 16 kilometers per hour on a car, a force capable of causing rib fractures.

Based on the scientists’ results, the stress on the breast with silicone implants was 23% lower than in a natural breast.

However, as the authors of the US study were quick to point out, ‘adipose tissue and silicone breast implants are essentially no substitute for seat belts and airbags’. According to German surgeon Helge Jens at higher speeds, larger breast implants provide no extra protection.

It should be noted that according to the German Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (DGÄPC), about 67,000 women undergo silicone breast augmentation every year.
