A 16-year-old athlete from Jamaica shocked the world of track and field by breaking a record held by the legend, Usain Bolt, since 2002.

We’re talking about Nekoi Bramwell, who attends a high school in Kingston and was initially favored to win gold in the boys’ under-17 400m at the 2024 Carifta Games held at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada.

These are international games held among Caribbean countries.

Having overcome a series of injury problems in recent months, including a groin issue, the Jamaican expressed readiness to chase the gold medal.

Not only did he manage to finish first, but Bramwell did so in the most dominant fashion, clocking in at 47.26 seconds, making history.

The teenager from Kingston broke the record set by Usain Bolt in the same games in 2002, with a time of 47.33 seconds.

As one can see in the video, those inside the Kirani James Athletics Stadium gave the young athlete a standing ovation, who seemed unable to believe what he had achieved at that moment. At the moment of crossing the finish line, he had a significant distance from everyone else, as Kemron Matlin from Grenada finished second in 47.96 seconds, while Igan Niley from Saint Lucia secured the bronze medal in 48.16 seconds.

Speaking after his record-breaking performance, the prodigy from Jamaica said, “It’s an amazing feeling to break the record. Since last summer, I’ve had my eye on the record, so it’s a great feeling to come here and achieve it,” and added, “I just took my mind off it and focused on the record.”
