Elon Musk: “Greece is experiencing demographic collapse” – A warning about declining birth rates

Based on these facts, the Greeks will be extinct around the middle of the following century...

Newsroom April 16 12:07

With a post that’s out of his usual style, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk rings the alarm bell for declining birth rates in countries like Greece, warning of a demographic collapse.

Specifically, in his post, Elon Musk writes that “Greece is one of the dozens of countries experiencing a demographic collapse due to low birth rates.”

In his post, Elon Musk shares an article from thepeoplesvoice.tv, which extensively discusses population aging in combination with other factors such as sudden deaths alongside declining births, ultimately leading to demographic collapse.

Musk highlights a real issue, which is the demographic situation in Greece. Births, as official data show, are decreasing while the population is aging.

Dramatic Population Decline in Greece by up to 1.5 Million by 2050

In this context, there is intense concern about demographic trends, with estimates suggesting a population decline in Greece by up to 1.5 million by 2050.

At the same time, births for 2023 hit a record low, with fewer than 73,000, specifically 72,244, data that are expected to be finalized by the civil registries and ELSTAT in the coming period. It should be noted that this number includes all births, not just those of Greeks, which means that the actual number of the Greek population is even lower. The fertility rate has fallen below 1.5% since 1987. This means that on average, each woman of reproductive age corresponds to one and a half children.

Negative Record for Greece – Ranks 6th Worldwide in Population Aging

During 2022, ELSTAT confirmed the shrinking trend of the Greek population: Births decreased by 10.31% compared to the previous year. In absolute numbers, in 2022, 76,541 children were born, which is 8,805 fewer than the 85,346 children recorded in civil registries across the country in 2021.

Moreover, the total number of births in 2022 broke every previous negative record for our country since 1955, as for the first time since official reliable statistical data are being kept, fewer than 80,000 births annually were recorded in Greece.
