African dust has turned Kalamata into Libya – Record gatherings in Crete – See photos

An explosive 'cocktail' of dust and heat in several areas of the country - Receding on Wednesday the phenomena

Newsroom April 23 05:45

The African dust, which has been visiting our country in recent hours, has already covered several areas, creating an explosive cocktail for residents.

Meteorologists recommend patience with the phenomenon estimated to gradually leave us on Wednesday.

The situation in Messinia and especially in the city of Kalamata is suffocating, with images circulating on the internet, reminiscent of… Libya.

The situation is also difficult in areas of Ilia, with African dust obscuring the sky, as can be seen from images in the port of Katakolon, the beach of Karouta and the area of Zacharo.

Landscape in the fog and in Chania with the African dust being intense and the atmosphere suffocating. In fact, today the temperature in the city exceeded 35 degrees Celsius.

Crete and the Peloponnese are particularly affected by the wave of dust transport from the Sahara, while high concentrations are also in Attica, as the Director of Research of the Athens Observatory, Kostas Lagovardos, told protothema.gr.

It is typical of the situation in Crete that yesterday, from 5.30 – 7.30 in the afternoon, concentrations of 300 micrograms of dust per cubic meter of air were recorded.

Concentrations dropped overnight to around 50 micrograms, and today, after 2 p.m., they began to rise rapidly. At 5 p.m. 430 micrograms were already recorded and the trend was still upwards.
