Russia says two police officers killed in an attack in North Caucasus

The attackers opened fire shortly before midnight yesterday from their car against a police station set up 'temporarily' in a village of 50km south of the regional capital Cherkessk

Two policemen were killed in an attack on Sunday night into Monday against a police station in the in the Caucasus republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, according to local authorities.

According to the local Interior Ministry’s account on the Telegram channel, the attackers opened fire shortly before midnight yesterday, Sunday, from their car against a police station that had been “temporarily” set up in the village, about 50 km south of the regional capital Cherkessk.

An exchange of fire ensued, resulting in the death of two policemen, the wounding of two others and the death of five attackers.

According to Russian investigators, the attackers who were killed had been involved in a previous attack on 22 April on police officers, which had resulted in the death of two people.

In the early 2000s, the Russian Caucasus was rocked by a jihadist insurgency that was brutally suppressed by Russian forces.
