Video Shows Moment 20-Year-Old Lifeguard Collapses

A video capturing the moment the 20-year-old lifeguard collapses has been released by creta24.gr. In the footage, he is seen walking with the support of another man in the middle of the street, approaching the opposite sidewalk, and then collapsing outside a store.

The man assisting him tries to catch him before he falls, supporting him on the pavement. Onlookers gather, call emergency services, and attempt to help the lifeguard, but he loses consciousness within seconds. Despite the efforts of EKAB rescuers and hospital doctors, the young man could not be revived and passed away. Witnesses reported that he had a fight with two young men earlier.

Lifeguard Attacked First, Say Lawyers for Accused

On Friday, the two 24-year-olds were arrested after the death of the lifeguard in Kalyves Apokoronou, Crete, are expected to appear before the investigator. According to creta24.gr, they face charges of complicity in fatal bodily harm.

Their lawyer stated that the 20-year-old initiated the altercation. “Eyewitnesses confirm that the deceased attacked first. He has no injuries attributable to the accused; we await the forensic report and further evidence,” said Mr. Dermanakis. He suggested that the lifeguard might have injured himself during the altercation, leading to his death.

Timeline of the Incident

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the lifeguard collapsed in the middle of the road in Kalyves. He was transported by EKAB ambulance to Chania General Hospital, where, despite the doctors’ efforts, he passed away. Local residents reported that there had been a heated argument with other youths shortly before his collapse.

Initially, three friends of the 24-year-olds—a 19-year-old Romanian, a 28-year-old Georgian, and an 18-year-old Bulgarian—were detained but later released as they were not involved in the incident.
