Athenians love beer, especially in the summer. A few years ago in this city, good breweries could be counted on one hand, but now the places worth visiting are much more numerous. Fortunately, choices are so diverse that they can satisfy even the most unique tastes.
Tyson Comfort Pub
Forty or more beers from every corner of the planet, focusing on those from Germany and Belgium. Among them are eleven draft beers, including our own Voreia IPA, with herbal aromas and caramel notes, and the pleasantly bitter Anastasiou Bohemian (PILS). The “chocolaty” Bernard Dark from Czechia, the spicy La Trappe Witte from the Netherlands with its spicy aftertaste, and the rich Belgian Delirium Nocturnum are just a few that deserve your attention. Also notable is the menu, which ventures into Latin American paths but highlights Greek ingredients: delicious chimichanga a hot dog with smoked Cretan sausage, a burger with Metsovone cheese and king oyster mushrooms, chorizo, and more. They all pair perfectly with beer and more. Z.P.

Pub
In this small beer bar, located inside a shopping center in Chalandri, you’ll find some of the rarest brews out there. It was one of the first places to focus on the most “sophisticated” labels. This is thanks to Fotis Anastasiou, a person who loves beer like few others. He even set up his microbrewery right next door. The Local Pub has about 20 taps, featuring the craft beers of nearby breweries, as well as offerings from other small breweries and nomadic brewers from Greece and abroad. V.D.

München – My way by Erich
Munich has been transported to Marousi thanks to the German chef Erich, who brought Bavarian philosophy to the northern suburbs of Athens. It is housed in an old Marousi house and during the summer, in addition to the courtyard, tables are set up on Dionysos pedestrian street. Here you have the opportunity to taste at least 7 different draft beers and about 30 different German, Belgian, and Greek labels. The menu introduces you to the deliciousness of traditional Bavarian cuisine through a variety of sausages, and smoked meats, noting that their specialty is the aged and crispy pork knuckle. G.M.

Paragon Brewery & Taproom
When I first visited Paragon Brewery, I couldn’t immediately pinpoint what attracted me so much to want to spend my entire evening there, just drinking beers with friends. Eventually, I realized that my struggle was justified, as during the evening I began to understand that Paragon is not just another brewery that would give me one or even two good reasons to visit. The plentiful and intriguing fresh beers, often rotating, that arrive at the bar with the philosophy “from production to consumption,” the comfortable industrial-style space with imposing metal tanks at first glance, and the super relaxed atmosphere that allows customers to bring even their pets, and the fact that you can order your choice of delivery from outside, are the reasons that from our first meeting made me firmly place Helioupolis in my choices for beer-pubbing!

Last Row Craft Beer Bar
The corner taproom in the center of Amarousion was just what the area needed to bring beer enthusiasts – and not only – together. A warm space with English pub colors and sounds of Greek hip-hop, punk, and post-rock starts welcoming groups from the afternoon who come to relax right after work, seeking tranquility at a time when there aren’t too many people around. It continues by offering takeaway beer to those who want to enjoy it with music after a concert at the nearby OAKA stadium and closes its doors late at night, one by one, in a place tightly packed until the last minute. What is the secret to its success? Nothing less and nothing more than a group of school friends – Aris, Zisis, and Elias – and their dream to introduce the world to the wonderful culture of craft beer.
The 16 taps behind the wooden bar fill glasses with aromas of malt and hops from a variety of at least 100 beer codes from microbreweries in Greece and abroad, hosting 10 new labels every week. The three friends, loving the art of brewing, offer their beer daily hazy IPA brewed in the Alea kettles to give aromas of citrus fruits and exotic coconut in the finish. The huge variety of sour and black beers with notes of fruit and aged whiskey, even peanut butter – this week try the summer Musli from Poland that smells like banana – 1-2 sips in tasting glasses and the warmth of our children convince us to move away from the classic Lager. And that’s how the group of beer friends grows. E.Ts.

Sxedia cafe-bar
A classic spot in Argyroupoli for both winter and summer, with traveler-themed decoration, great music, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s an all-day bar, with a focus on beer, and has been in the area for over 20 years. You’ll find several classics as well as more sophisticated beer options. Wood dominates the decor, while various elements inside (like the 1753 map on the ceiling, and compasses) transport you elsewhere. I love its outdoor courtyard, open year-round, and surrounded by bushes, which somewhat conceals the cityscape. Here, there are also plenty of food choices, and occasionally they bring in different snacks to accompany the beer, which they make themselves in the kitchen, besides the classic nuts. Due to the ample greenery around, it’s also a good choice for hot days. N.K.

Blueprint Rock Bar – Cafe
Blueprint isn’t just a beer bar; it’s the alternative hangout for old rock fans of the northern suburbs, having grown up with some of the best generations. It’s been in the same spot for more than 20 years, in one of the most central corners of the area, unchanged and authentic, wooden and slightly dim, just enough to isolate yourself and enjoy your coffee, beer, and company. It got its name from the first album of one of the greatest blues-rock guitarists and performers, Rory Gallagher, and his marks are almost imprinted all over the space. You’ll find a satisfying selection of beers, and it’s the ideal place for old-fashioned drinks. G.M.
