The publication of the daily edition of the newspaper “Avgi” is being suspended, citing financial problems from SYRIZA‘s HQ at Koumoundourou. The SYRIZA party newspaper will continue only with the Sunday edition, while assurances were given that efforts will be made to develop the newspaper‘s website.
According to information, the party’s decision to suspend the daily edition of the historic newspaper has already been communicated to the employees by SYRIZA’s financial manager, Christos Mavrokefalidis, as well as to the Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA). The employees of “Avgi,” who were informed earlier that they would not need to write articles since the issue being circulated was the last one, have scheduled a general assembly at 19:00.
In early 2022, Alexis Tsipras had decided to close the daily edition of the newspaper but backed down after strong reactions from the employees.
A newspaper with a great history
The newspaper “Avgi” was first published in August 1952, with its first editor being Vasilis Efremidis, who was succeeded by Manolis Glezos. Its publication was banned by the junta of the colonels and it was republished in August 1974 by the interior faction of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE es.).
