A smart bicycle parking station has been set up in the central square of the municipality of Heraklion outside the bus station.
This is an initiative of the municipality of Heraklion which gives another dimension to the city’s cyclists.
The micro-mobility hub is the first secure and free bicycle parking station in the basin.
Heraklion’s deputy mayor of digital governance, Emilia Tziva, was the first to park her bike in an innovative way by simply pressing a button on her mobile phone.

The mayor of Heraklion, Nikos Babalos, also commented on the new innovative micro-mobility hub parking station.
“We are opening the central square of our city to our fellow citizens. By doing this, we aim to inject more life into the heart of Heraklion, encouraging people of all ages to enjoy leisurely walks, particularly those who remain in the city during the summer. We also want to demonstrate that it’s possible to live without relying on cars by using alternative, healthier modes of transportation for both people and the environment.”
The goal is to make Heraklion’s central square more pedestrian-friendly, especially for Sunday strolls, and to promote the idea that citizens can embrace alternative transportation methods, such as walking and cycling.
This is the first station of its kind to be installed in a municipality in Attica and the second nationwide. It aims to encourage citizens to leave their cars at home and use bikes instead. To facilitate this shift, the municipality chose to place this first “hub” in the central square, right next to the city’s train station, to support intercity travel via public transport.
