Tokio Hotel: Where is the Phenomenal German Band Today

Netflix's new documentary, "Kaulitz & Kaulitz," unveils details about the lives of Tokio Hotel's members. It explores Bill's attacks for his style, the sexuality he had to hide, and their successes

Tokio Hotel, the phenomenal band from Germany, consists of the Kaulitz twins, Georg Listing, and Gustav Schäfer. They gained millions of fans in 2005 with the song “Monsoon” and have now ventured into Netflix.

The streaming service’s new documentary, titled “Kaulitz & Kaulitz,” focuses on the lives of the twin brothers and founding members, Bill and Tom.

From the first episode, it’s clear that not only their eccentric style and music have changed, but their entire lives have transformed.

Eccentric Appearance and Attacks

Frontman Bill Kaulitz has finally embraced being himself, living life on his terms, free from managers’ directives. In one documentary segment, with tears in his eyes, Bill reflects on the hardships during Tokio Hotel’s peak.

He mentions how the majority of their fans were girls, complicating his life. The band’s managers wouldn’t allow him to “ruin” his image by revealing his sexuality. Bill also had to deal with unwarranted hate due to his eccentric appearance, which, although fitting for the “emo” era, had many detractors.

The band often arrived at their performances with a “security army” and were accompanied in public to avoid booing and even getting tomatoes thrown at them.

This dark period led Gustav and Georg to opt for a lower profile, avoiding the spotlight, unlike the Kaulitz twins, who, perhaps inadvertently, exposed their lives more to the press.

Bill Kaulitz’s Revelation About His Sexuality and New Life

Since publicly stating in 2014 that he is attracted to men, Bill Kaulitz now lives freely and is possibly in his best phase. He remarked, “Maybe I’ll meet someone who will change my life forever, and if that happens, does it matter what gender they are?”

In 2021, Bill revealed he had a multifaceted relationship with his best friend and his girlfriend.

In 2019, he appeared as a judge on the 10th season of “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” and co-hosted the drag queen competition “Queen of Drags” with his sister-in-law, Heidi Klum. He and his brother also joined the German “The Voice” judging panel.

Additionally, he has an OnlyFans account, with subscription revenues going to the International Marine Mammal Project.

Together with Tom, they also host the successful podcast “Kaulitz Hills – Mustard from Hollywood.”

Both live in Los Angeles, very close to each other, as they can’t stay apart for long. Tom’s marriage to Heidi Klum marked the first time the twins lived separately.

However, music still connects them, with Bill frequently recording in Tom’s home studio. Bill’s close friendship with Heidi also helps them spend a lot of time together.

“Bill lives close by… He’s only ten minutes away, so we spend a lot of time together,” Tom told People magazine. “Even at breakfast, we have a lot of people, and it sometimes gets crazy, but in a good way. I’m a family man, I love family, and I enjoy quality time,” he added.

Tom Kaulitz’s Marriage to Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz married in Capri, Italy, in 2019. The then 46-year-old model and the 29-year-old guitarist wed on Onassis’s legendary yacht “Christina O” with 120 guests.

According to Hollywood Life, the ceremony cost over 3 million euros, with white flowers decorating the event. The bride was accompanied by her four children, Leni, Henry, Joan, and Lou. Heidi’s ex-husband Seal also attended.

After the ceremony, the couple ditched their shoes and walked barefoot on the yacht’s deck.

Rumors about their relationship started in March 2018 when they were seen kissing on the “America’s Got Talent” set, where Klum is a judge. Their first public appearance was at the Cannes Film Festival Gala in May 2018.

Six years later, they still seem deeply in love, often sharing moments from their daily lives on social media.

Despite the 16-year age difference, they continue to show that age is just a number for them.

In a recent interview, Heidi Klum said about her age, “Lately, people keep reminding me of my age; they remember it better than I do. My partner is many years younger, and many questions or asked about our relationship.”

“It’s the only time I feel my age is ‘rubbed in my face’ and have to apologize for it,” she added.

The Band’s Journey

Tokio Hotel was formed in 2001 when the Kaulitz brothers were just 15. Tom Kaulitz is the lead guitarist, and Bill is the singer. Gustav Schäfer plays drums, and Georg Listing plays bass.

The four met in 2001 after a live performance in a club in Magdeburg. Listing and Schäfer, who knew each other from their music school, attended the concert where Bill and Tom performed. They instantly clicked and, seeing their musical tastes matched, recorded a demo under the name “Devilish.”

The band started performing at talent shows and small concerts but initially didn’t gain much success. This changed when Bill Kaulitz auditioned for the TV reality show “Star Search.”

Soon after, in 2005, they released their first German album, “Schrei,” introducing Tokio Hotel to the public for the first time.

The album sold over half a million copies worldwide. Their first single, “Durch den Monsun” (Through the Monsoon), quickly topped the charts, reaching number one a few days after its release on August 26, 2005.

They have remained active over the years, releasing 12 albums, 36 singles, and numerous music videos.

Their latest release is the song “The Weekend,” which came out on May 2. They are currently preparing for the final leg of their “Beyond the World” tour, starting in November.
