A radical overhaul is underway in the country’s blood donation system—a restructuring that has been anticipated for two decades by all those involved in blood donation as well as those who need blood for their health needs. The relevant law has been passed since 2005 (N.3402/2005) and has been in effect since last May.

In recent weeks, by the decision of the Deputy Minister of Health, Marios Themistokleous, the collection, control, processing, and distribution of blood are now managed by the National Blood Donation Center (EKEA).

As explained to ygeiamou.gr by the president of EKEA, Mr. Panagiotis Katsivelas, the collection, control, processing, and distribution of blood are now implemented for the first time by the Center, making it a hub for the rapid and safe distribution of blood within the health system.
