A heat wave that started yesterday and will continue at least until the weekend with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, meteorologists predict. The high temperatures will also be accompanied by winds which increases the risk of fire.

According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis & Civil Protection, today a very high fire risk (risk category 4) is predicted in Attica and in 7 areas in Peloponnese, North Agaio and Sterea Greece.

In particular, a very high fire risk is forecast for the following areas:

Region of Attica (including the island of Kythera)
Region of Peloponnese (Region of Corinth, Region of Argolida, Region of Laconia)
Region of North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios)
Region of Central Greece (Boeotia, Evia)

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has informed the competent government departments involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of the above-mentioned areas, so that they are on increased civil protection preparedness in order to deal immediately with any fire incidents.

Yesterday the temperature exceeded 40 °C in 3 areas

A rise in temperature was recorded in the country on Monday 08/07, exceeding 40 °C in places. According to the network of automatic weather stations of meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens, the maximum temperature was recorded in Lindos and was equal to 40.9 °C. The relevant table shows the 8 stations of the network that recorded the highest temperatures on Monday 08/07.

The weather today

Sunshine is expected across the country with only a few local clouds, mainly during the warmer hours of the day.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 15 to 35 degrees, in the rest of northern Greece from 18 to 37-39 degrees and possibly locally in Thrace 40 degrees, in Thessaly from 20 to 39-41 degrees, in Epirus from 23 to 37-39 degrees, in the rest of the western and southern continental parts from 23 to 39-41 degrees and possibly locally in the southern Peloponnese 42 degrees, in the eastern mainland from 23 to 37-39 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 21 to 36-37 degrees Celsius, in the East Aegean islands from 24 to 38-40 degrees Celsius, in Crete from 24 to 32-34 degrees Celsius and in the remaining Aegean islands from 24 to 35-37 degrees Celsius.

The winds will blow from the north in the Aegean Sea with intensities of 5-6 Beaufort and in the Ionian Sea north-northwest with intensities of 4-6 Beaufort.

MACEDONIA, THRACE

Winds: Variable 3 to 4 Beaufort, in the east from the north 4 to 5 and in Thrace locally up to 6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 19 to 38 degrees Celsius. In western Macedonia it will be 3 to 4 degrees lower.

From 19 to 19 degrees Celsius, the temperature will be lower and the temperature will be lower by 3.5 degrees Celsius.

IONIAN ISLANDS EPIRUS

Weather. In the midday and afternoon hours on the mainland, clouds will develop and in Epirus there will be local rain and in the mountains possibly isolated thunderstorms.

Generally clear weather and only in the midday and afternoon hours in the central and northern continents will develop local clouds and in the northern mountains (mainly in Thrace) local rainfall may occur.
Winds will blow from the north at 4 to 6 and locally in the Aegean Sea at 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will not change significantly and will reach 36 to 38 degrees Celsius on the Ionian Islands and the mainland and 39 to 40 degrees Celsius in some places on the mainland. In the rest of the island country it will reach 31 to 33 degrees Celsius and in places on the islands of the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and southern Crete 34 to 36 degrees Celsius.

THURSDAY 11-07-2024
Generally clear weather, with local clouds in the midday and afternoon hours on the mainland and local rainfall is possible in the mountains, mainly in Macedonia.
Winds will blow from the north 4 to 6 and occasionally in the Aegean up to 7 Beaufort.
The temperature will rise slightly and will be high in several areas of the mainland. It will reach 37 to 39 degrees Celsius in the mainland and in some places 40 and possibly 41 degrees Celsius. It should be noted that in coastal areas the maximum values will be 2 to 4 degrees lower.
In the island country the temperature will reach 33 to 35 degrees Celsius and in some places on the Ionian and eastern Aegean islands 36 to 37 degrees Celsius.

FRIDAY 12-07-2024
Generally clear weather but in the midday and afternoon hours in the mainland clouds will develop and mainly in the northern mountains there will be local rainfall.

Generally clear weather but in the afternoon and in the continental areas local clouds will develop and rain is possible in the mountains.

The temperature will rise slightly again and will be very high.
