What happened

The incident happened when the Greek-Canadian financier, who is in Heraklion, Crete on holiday with his family, observed a group of Cretans in a cafe bar as one of them burned his hand with his cigarette.

The remark apparently offended the Cretans, who reacted violently and savagely beat the stockbroker in front of his children.

After the attack, the Canadian tourist was immediately taken to the Venizelion Hospital with severe head injuries and there he underwent hours of surgery to repair his injuries.

It should be noted that in the previous days it became known that two of the perpetrators have been identified. Specifically, they are a 31-year-old man from a village of Mylopotamos and a 32-year-old man from an area of the municipality of Malevizi, while two others are reportedly being sought.

Emmanuel Kakoulakis continues to be hospitalized and was scheduled to be visited by the Canadian ambassador this morning, showing the Canadian government’s support for its citizen.

The statement from the victim’s lawyer

The victim’s lawyer, Manolis Troulis, told protothema.gr: “Those who witnessed the incident were stunned by the brutality of the vicious attack on the Greek-Canadian father of Crete origin for a trivial reason and in front of his children. He underwent 6 hours of surgery on his face and head during which he had to undergo a tracheostomy due to the severity of his multiple injuries. The brutal attack by the pack of bullies put his life in danger and when they found that their victim was now unconscious and bleeding, they fled to avoid the consequences, not caring about his condition. The authorities are very close to identifying all the persons involved in the attack. This stupid and unjustified aggression not only harms people but also undermines the basic values of our Cretan society. It is imperative that society unites and acts decisively to protect our families and ensure that they can live with dignity and safety. The family will do whatever is necessary to hold the perpetrators accountable and punish them in an exemplary manner and thus send a strong message that such behavior is not tolerated by anyone.”
