Two dead horses and several others showing symptoms of dehydration have been found in the last 20 days in the Ainish Delta,with the local association sounding the alarm over the risk of extinction of the beautiful wild animals, while, for the same reason, livestock farmers are moving their herds away from the northern part of the Delta to the interior of the county.
Water scarcity, seawater intrusion into the Evros River Delta and extremely high temperatures appear to have led to the death of 2 horses out of 200 living in the area.
Residents of the area and members of the “Aenesio Delta” association took action to save most of the population of wild horses living in the area, using their own means to transport makeshift watering troughs and 300 cans of water, which were placed at points in the Aenesio.
Veterinarians from the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace are expected to visit the area today in order to perform an autopsy on the dead horses and determine the exact cause of their death.
