Two slices of bread and in the middle cheese and ham or whatever other ingredients we can imagine, depending on our taste and eating habits. In almost all homes there is a toaster. However, what happens when we don’t have much kitchen space and decide to retire small appliances? Can we replace our toaster with the air fryer?
There are many quick and easy recipes that can be made in the air fryer. If you’ve wondered how easy it is to make toast or sandwiches, the answer is simple: yes, it can be done. However, you just need to pay attention to a few small details.
Choosing the bread
There are a number of brands on the market that make toast. However, ideally you can also buy from your bakery which has options with fewer preservatives and additives. You can also make toast with any bread you buy from the bakery or with some that you may have prepared yourself, as long as you slice it. The thinner the slices, the less time it takes in the air fryer to cook properly.
Oil or butter
In order for the toast to cook well, even if you’ve used a non-stick baking tray of the kind that have come out lately, you need to brush the bread with butter or spray it with oil (this is where the oil spray gadget comes in handy). This way, you help the bread to brown nicely and not burn, but it also gives it a nicer smelling flavor.
Baking time
Once you have buttered your breads, place the toast(s) in the air fryer). Place the bottom slice with the buttered side resting on the fryer pan (or non-stick paper). Place the filling ingredients on top and close the toast with the top buttered slice facing up. Bake the toast for a total of 6-8 minutes, depending on your appliance.
The necessary turning
In order for the toast to cook properly and evenly, you need to flip the toast midway through, which is when 3-4 minutes have passed. We remove it from the fryer when it has browned enough, depending on our taste.
Beware of… “flying breads”
If you’ve already tried making toast and something went very wrong, don’t worry! You are not alone. Due to the air that diffuses into the appliance, there is a risk that the top bread will start to… fly and get stuck in the top of the fryer. It’s something we don’t want to happen but we can easily prevent it. How? By securing the toast with a toothpick.
