West Nile virus: Where the first patient death was recorded in Greece – Increase in cases expected

A man over 73 years old with underlying diseases from Serres region is the first fatal case - It is worth noting that last year, the first case in the whole country was recorded in the same area

One death of a patient over the age of 73 with a West Nile virus infection was recorded in the Weekly Epidemiological Surveillance Report, published by the EODC on 24 July 2024.

Specifically, it is reported that from the beginning of the 2024 season, until 24/07/2024 (13.00), a total of sixteen (16) domestic cases of West Nile virus infection in Greece have been diagnosed and investigated, of which fourteen (14) cases presented with manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis) and two (2) cases had mild manifestations/no CNS manifestations (Table 1).

Nine (9) new domestic cases were diagnosed and reported during the past week. One imported case of the infection in a patient exposed to another foreign country has also been recorded (not included in further analysis). One (1) death of a patient aged over 73 years with viral infection and CNS manifestations has been recorded.
